I am sure that you are wondering what in the world is going on with that last name! Well, in Colombian culture, a child takes on the name of both his/her father and mother...so the birth certificate that we get for Jonatan tomorrow will show both of our birth last names. The birth certificate for the U.S. will only show Derr.
We came back to El Cortijo for a wonderful fiesta with our friends from Italy, Jose, Mauricio (our interpreter) and his girlfriend, as well as a surpise visit Alba, our lawyer's wife! Jonatan loved every moment of it...in fact, there was wonderful fiesta music playing...and all he wanted to do was "baila" (dance) and eat his empanadas! In fact, he ate so many empanadas that he had no room for the chocolate cake that we bought a second time for him to enjoy...as the first one was purchased for the day we all first met, although he was so upset that cake was not an option.
Dave called Lucia this afternoon to talk about the finer details of what was next. What we expect is this...tomorrow morning Hector is picking up Jonatan's Colombian birth certificate after he stops by and picks up copies of the paperwork that we signed today. In the afternoon, we will go and take care of getting Jonatan's Colombian passport. We actually took care of the photos for this today.
Depending on the time, we will either fly out tomorrow night to Bogota or Friday morning...since the passport office does not open in the afternoon until 2 p.m., we may very well fly out Friday morning. Lucia mentioned that we can take care of Jonatan's medical visit on Friday afternoon once we arrive to Bogota. We will have the afternoon to relax and enjoy Bogota before we then need to go on Monday and apply for Jonatan's immigration at the U.S. Embassy. We understand that this takes about a day to issue, so we may very have his immigration paperwork in hand by Tuesday...which would mean that we could fly home on Wednesday!

Oh happy day again! This calls for official congratulations Daddy and Mommy. It is interesting that your maiden name is Jonatan's last name in Colombian eyes. Hope you continue to have a great time. We thank God for continuing to answer everyone's prayers.
